Pogostemon cablin

Steam Distilled

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is a species of plant from the Lamiaceae family, commonly called the “mint” or “dead nettle” family. It grows as a bush, with erect stems reaching approximately 2.5 ft in height and has small, pale pink-white flowers. It is native to tropical regions of Asia, and is typically grown and cultivated in warm, humid climates. The plant is extremely versatile, having multiple different use cases ranging from expected to highly unusual.

Because patchouli has such warm, earthy notes, it is widely used in modern perfumery creation, particularly in high end fragrances. People tend to have a strong reaction to it – they either love it or despise it. It is widely believed that this is due to its proper and improper utilization of the plant in its various forms, including either as an essential oil or in crushed leaf format. A little goes a long way with this effervescent plant, and too much is definitely overpowering.

The Odd Use Case of a Toy
In the mid-1980s, Mattel released an action figure named “Stinkor” related to the Masters of the Universe (He Man) line of toys. Patchouli oil was embedded into the plastic of the toy which allowed it to emit a fragrance for a period of time.

Patchouli can be cultivated multiple times during a single growing season, allowing it to be abundantly produced with very little environmental impact.
