What is CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant, which interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Commercially-offered CBD products cannot contain more than 0.3 percent THC, which is what creates a sensation of feeling “high.”

CBD oil is extracted from cannabis.
CBD oil has a wide range of purported benefits.

The US Food & Drug Administration recently approved an oral CBD solution called Epidiolex to treat two severe pediatric seizure disorders. CBD is widely used to treat pain, anxiety, and other ailments in humans but has not received FDA approval for any other therapeutic benefits.

CBD for dogs

When it comes to using CBD for pets, evidence of efficacy is largely anecdotal due to a dearth of research. A lack of FDA approval and confusion over legalization prior to the 2018 Farm Bill has delayed scientific studies. Despite that, pet owners routinely seek out information on CBD. According to a survey conducted by the Veterinary Information Network, 28.8 percent of respondents from an online community of veterinarians reported that they’ve been asked about CBD use for dogs on a weekly basis.

Promising research from Colorado State University showed that of a small study involving 16 dogs, 89 percent of epileptic dogs had fewer seizures after ingesting a chicken-flavored CBD oil, compared to 20 percent that had taken a placebo.

Another study from Cornell University appeared to show an increase in activity and a significant reduction in pain among dogs included in a randomized, placebo-controlled study regarding CBD oil for dogs.

While research suggests that CBD is not addictive and has few side effects, it’s not entirely without risk to your pet. If your dog is on medication, consult with your veterinarian prior to experimenting with CBD.

Also, when choosing a CBD option, look for organic products specifically formulated for pets that offers a Certificate of Analysis (COA) online or upon request. CBD isolate is the safest option, because it has a higher purity level and excludes THC which can be toxic for dogs in large doses and can cause dry mouth and drowsiness with even small amounts. An oil or tincture is the easiest medium for controlling dosage.

If your pup is dealing with anxiety, arthritis or achey joints from old age, or suffers from frequent nausea or seizures, CBD may be an appropriate therapeutic option. Help reduce stress and relieve pain in your best friend with CBD for dogs.
