Benefits of meditation

If you’re not experienced in the practice of meditation, it can seem like some esoteric activity practiced solely by hippies, yogis, Buddhists, or the people who manage to represent all three categories at once. You don’t have to be a sage-burning, chakra-aligning, aura-reading type to enjoy a meditation practice. Meditation has dramatically risen in popularity in recent years due to its calming effects, however, there’s plenty of science to support the claims of people who tout the positive effects of meditation. Research shows that a regular meditation practice can change the actual structure of your brain.

A Harvard-affiliated study took scans of the brains of participants both before and after an eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Participants spent an average of 27 minutes each day practicing meditation and mindfulness exercises, and reported less stress at the conclusion of the study. The brain scans found an increased volume of gray matter in the hippocampus area of the brain, responsible for learning and memory, as well as in structures associated with compassion, introspection, and self-awareness.

There was also a reduction in gray-matter volume in the amygdala, an area associated with anxiety and stress – which may explain the reported lowered stress rates of participants.

“Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” says Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.”

CBD and meditation

CBD is reported to reduce stress, promote feelings of relaxation, and relieve pain, which can help improve the focus necessary to devote time to starting a meditation practice.

CBD is available in many different forms, from edible gummies to CBD-infused aromatherapy.

Incorporate CBD into your meditation practice.
Use CBD 15 minutes before meditation to get the full effect.

It can take up to 15 minutes to start feeling the effects, so plan your meditation session accordingly. Otherwise, all you need to meditate is a quiet space, a clear mind, and an awareness of the rhythm of your breath.

If you’d like some additional guidance, download an app like Calm or Headspace and find a guided meditation session that you feel comfortable with.

Pair the stress-reducing properties of CBD with the physiological benefits of meditation to introduce more peace into your life. Even dedicating 10 minutes each day to starting a meditation practice can help you establish a valuable habit that can improve your health and wellness.

Add CBD to your meditation practice with a KININ Eco and CBD-infused Wellness Pods.
